I felt the need to do a little more investigation, so I visited Trey's verified Twitter account. As I read through some of his tweets, I came upon one that said "I'm goin til 1,220." Trey currently follows 1,219 fans/friends. The artist seems to do an honorable job interacting with his fans, as he has many tweets wishing users a happy birthday, or retweeting something they say. But I found this particular tweet to be brilliant, and what I assumed to have sparked the TT of "#treyfollowmenext." All his followers who saw this tweet want to be that last person that he follows back. So they're all tweeting him, asking him to follow them. This puts his name out there like crazy! There is all this buzz about Trey Songz on Twitter, and it's all free! And since I'm sure the artist will be reading this post - Trey, I commend you for your genius tactic. Tuesday, April 19, 2011
#treyfollowmenext
I was browsing the top trends on Twitter as I do daily, and found that "#treyfollowmenext" sparked the most interest for me. My first question, of course, was Trey who? So I started reading some tweets, and the TT is directed at Trey Songz, who is an American singer-songwriter, rapper, record producer and actor. Thousands of tweets are streaming in, begging the artist to follow them.

It looks like Trey Songz has this social media thing down. He knows how to use platforms, such as Twitter, to get his name out there and increase his popularity. He is also gaining loyalty by increasing interaction with his fans. It is very rare that you find celebrities willing to take time out of their day to get to know their fans. Social media allows this to be done more easily. Instead of responding to old school 'fan mail' he can use Twitter to reach thousands of his fans as one time.
ReplyDeleteThats awesome for him! I know a lot of the celebs I follow refuse to follow anyone for that matter "because its too much to keep up with" yet here is Trey showing a great example. The more that fans feel appreciated the better following I think an artist will maintain, and what Trey is doing is helping him do so. Not only does it get him involved with his fans, they are able to give him plently of feedback FOR FREE!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea on his part! This gets people to follow him and be interactive with him, through his Twitter account he can post information about his latest venture. As you mentioned this also gives him free publicity people that may not normally be talking about him are now spreading his name.
ReplyDeleteHaha - good way for him to get publicity! He probably didn't think it would spark THIS much traffic but I'm sure his publicity team and he are both happy about it. I wonder how he will choose his last tweeter. Also, I find it very respectable that he interacts so much with his followers - it shows that he appreciates his fans and realizes that he wouldn't be where he was without his fans. I think it's important for any type of celebrity to stay grounded and also show their fans that they still care.
ReplyDeleteThis is a great way to get his name out there in the social media world! It is great that he interacts with his fans on Twitter as much as he does. It is very hard to find celebrities who actually follow "normal" people or fans not just other celebrity friends. I am very impressed by his interaction and by him doing this makes him a more likable celebrity.
ReplyDeleteI think this will help increase his fan base. I know I’m addicted to twitter and anytime a famous person follows me I get excited and tell all my friends. I have only had one famous person follow me and it is Hugh Heffner’s fiancĂ© Crystal. Even though I love the E! channel and watch it whenever I get a free chance, I was never a big fan of his fiancĂ© on the show “The Girls Next Door”. Needless to say when she followed me I changed my mind. Silly I know but it does make your fans fill like they aren’t some random person off the street.
ReplyDeleteNo, I know exactly what you're saying, Kasey! I had seen the band, 10 Years, at a show over the summer. I started following them and tweeted them once. They retweeted me and followed back, so that alone convinced me to go pick up their new album. It really does affect the fans to see that celebrities attempt to make them feel appreciated.
ReplyDeleteI think that it seems like a great way to get your name out there. just like with all promotional ideas you need to create and it seems like trey did a great job of doing that. its fast easy and effecient. I have a twitter and it is always funny to see what some of the people i follow have to say and im pretty close to ordering a shirt from one guy.
