This relates a lot to my last post about Kenneth Cole, in how much just one tweet can affect. The actual tweet stated, "Yeah so it's true...i got a lil haircut...i like it...and we are giving all the hair cut to CHARITY to auction. Details coming soon." Thousands of fans were upset and obviously 80,000 were upset enough to unfollow the celebrity. This just once again goes to show the powerfulness of social media and how many people it can actually affect. However, this isn't an example of poorly using the social media tools, rather just an unfortunate occurrence where fans didn't want change.

80,000 Followers Lost Over Hair
We all know Justin Bieber is everywhere, and so was his trademarked "Bieber" hair. Until he cut it. Then tweeted about it. He lost 80,000 followers in just hours after the tweet emerged. Not that the 80,000 likely affected the 17-year-old singer -- he still has almost 7.8 million followers.

I think this also goes to show the different maturity levels of the people using social media today. Those 80,000 followers were probably love-struck girls that couldn't imagine their "Beiber Fever" would ever be the same without his long locks.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree on your post. The power of one tweet can make a huge difference to a person's followers. Celebrities have always had a big influence on the American public, but with the power of Twitter, Facebook, Blogs, and other social media sources, their influence has grown tremendously. I think we'll continue to see the impact in cases like this.
I didn't think of that aspect. If it's true that the majority of the 80,000 were young girls (which I presume it is), that is also a good representation of how many young'ens are tweeting!
ReplyDeleteYour post made me smile. As I said last week in one of my comments I do not use Twitter so I do not follow what is going on, on this web site. Your example is quite funny. Just for a haircut this singer lost 80,000 followers, it’s huge!
ReplyDeleteWith this example you show perfectly how much social media is used for everything and at any time. Those users who stopped following this artist just for his haircut are I guess tweetering all day long; it is a tool which is complete part of their lives.
Its true when people find “new fame” such a Justin Bieber it is all about the image in today music would and with out the right image or what fans thing the right image is he will lose fan at a drop of a hat. Crazy
